Knowing how to call triple zero (000) in an emergency can be the difference between life and death.

The 000 service is the quickest way to get the right emergency service to help you.

It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life threatening or emergency situations.

Calls to 000 are free and can be made from mobile, home and work telephones, and payphones.

When to call Triple Zero

Stay focused, stay relevant and stay on the line.

  • Is someone seriously injured or in need of urgent medical help?
  • Is your life or property being threatened?
  • Have you just witnessed a serious accident or crime?
  • If you answered YES to any of the above call 000

When you call Triple Zero

  • Do you want Police, Fire or Ambulance?
  • Stay calm, don't shout, speak slowly and clearly
  • Tell us exactly where to come
  • Give an address if you don’t know your exact location is there a visual landmark or unusual sound you can tell us about nearby so we can find you?

If you are calling from a satellite phone or from international or interstate

  • Dial +61 8 9395 9395
  • in a life threatening emergency.

If you are deaf or have a speech or hearing impairment call 106

  • This is a Text Emergency Call, not an SMS
  • You can call from teletypewriters
  • Tell us which service you need and where to come to

Using the 106 Text Emergency Relay Service (TERS)

  • To use TERS simply dial 106, which is a toll-free number
  • You will be asked if you want police (type PPP), fire (FFF) or ambulance (type AAA). Note Speak and read (or voice carry over) users just need to say 'police', 'fire' or 'ambulance' to the relay officer
  • The relay officer will dial the correct service and stay on the line to relay your conversation
  • As a TTY is connected to a fixed line, the emergency service can locate where you are calling from
  • You will be asked to confirm your address
  • The 106 service can only be dialled from a TTY, it cannot be used by:
  • an ordinary phone
  • text message (SMS) on a mobile phone, or
  • Internet relay
