Role of the fire investigations officers

DFES Fire Investigation Officers:

  • Identifies and analyses fire trends
  • Investigates fire incidents
  • Assists WA Police Force with malicious ‘false alarm of fire’ prosecutions
  • Provides assistance and information to WA Police Force to detect and apprehend arsonists
  • Provides advice to insurance investigators, government agencies and authorities, and the general community
  • Identifies faulty products and work practices which cause fires.

Fires investigated by Fire Investigation Officers

DFES Fire Investigation Officers will attend a fire that:

  • Has an unknown cause
  • Is suspicious in nature
  • Involves a fatality
  • Involves life threatening injuries
  • Is politically sensitive
  • Damages significant infrastructure
  • Is a significant accidental fire.
